Grantham
At a Glance: This fast-growing town, the gateway to Upper Valley, has a small but emerging commercial district that includes a quilt shop, stitchery shop, and two unique gift shops. Population: 1,404.

Overview: Outdoor recreation is plentiful. In the spring, summer and fall play a round of golf at Eastman Golf Links. The man-made Eastman Lake has a public boat launch.

When the snow falls the course is turned into the Eastman Cross Country Ski Center, with beautifully-groomed Nordic trails and an ice skating pond. If you'd rather say inside during the winter and practice your golf a bit more, spend some time on a golf simulator or indoor driving range at Grantham Indoor.

For hikers and snowmobilers, the Donas J. and Margaret Reney Memorial Forest offers a 428-acre recreation area. The forested trail begins from a Forest Society kiosk and parking area off Route 10 at the south end of the town.

For those interested in a shorter hike, visit the Grantham Village School nature trail, which begins from the school's parking lot off of Route 114. There, you'll also find tennis courts, a ball field and an outdoor basketball court.

A recreational bike trail begins at the north end of town and winds through the woods parallel to Interstate 89.
