History Lover's Summer Tour
Take this adventure June through Columbus Day weekend, when all three major stops are open.
Arrive mid-morning at The Fells, an historic estate on Lake Sunapee in Newbury, best known for its extensive historic gardens. Meander for an hour through the colorful landscape, including the "secret" Pan Garden and the impressive Rock Garden with a flowing stream. Tour the 22-room Main House. Relax on the veranda. Enjoy your picnic lunch on the veranda or stop at one of several wonderful restaurants for lunch.
By 12:30 (Tuesdays or Sundays), be at the New London Historical Society's charming village on Route 114. Spend an hour in the 1800s, exploring the blacksmith shop, country store, millinery and several other lovingly-restored buildings, including the transportation museum with its Concord Coach.
It's a 15-minute drive to Sunapee Harbor where you can board the MV Mount Sunapee II for a lake cruise. Relax in your deck chair and enjoy the beautiful scenery while your Captain narrates the history of the lake, pointing out landmarks along the way. Bring a sweatshirt if you want to enjoy the top deck because it can get breezy.
By 3:30 you'll be back in the harbor and ready to explore antiques shops in the region. You'll especially like Prospect Hill Antiques in nearby Georges Mills.
Can't do it all in one day? Stay a while longer at one
of the inns, bed & breakfasts or cottages in the area.
